"It's disgusting": Guest at hotel once described as worst in the country 'films mi
A hotel once described as the worst hotel in the UK is facing yet more bad publicity after a guest claimed he saw large mice running through the lobby.
PhD student Sean Richardson, 24, filmed footage of what he claims were four or five rodents inside the Britannia Hotel in Birmingham city centre.
He reportedly shot footage of one of the mice running across the carpet in the lobby of the hotel which was described as the worst hotel in the UK by consumer magazine Which? in November 2016.
Speaking to the Birmingham Mail , Sean claimed: “There were a handful of mice, probably four or five running around the lobby in the evening, where there is a bar which they were running behind.
“I did report it to the hotel alongside a couple of others guests, they just said ‘There’s no mice in the rooms’.”
He also said he was surprised by the reaction of the staff after he raised his concerns following his stay on on September 11.
“They kind of just brushed it off, as if it was normal.
“The staff were friendly but it just seemed like they were used to the complaints.”
Sean added: "I stayed for one night. The hotel was really bad basically. The pictures didn’t match the ones online, I was given a room that had a balcony with the door wide open and no key, so I couldn’t lock it.
“I asked to be moved, though at first they said the room was fine. There were a couple of other guests I met in the lobby who said they thought the hotel was disgusting.”
A spokesperson for the Britannia Hotel said: “We take any concerns raised about health and safety very seriously, however we’ve not had any reports of rodents at the hotel.”
The hotel also hit the headlines in April this year, when actor Jordan Cunningham, who played Ritchie Valens in Buddy - The Buddy Holly Musical at the New Alexandra Theatre, said he had to leave the hotel after two nights in two different rooms because “it was minging.”
He also wrote a scathing review of the hotel on TripAdvisor, saying: "Do not stay here! It’s possibly one of the worst hotels in the UK.
“Do not stay here! I repeat, no matter how cheap it is, do not stay here. It’s disgusting.”
The hotel in New Street is part of the Britannia Hotel group which owns 53 hotels across the country.
