Bogside residents forced out by rat infestations

A number of families have been forced to leave their homes in Derry’s Bogside because they have been over-run by rats.

One mother-of-two was left distraught after finding 10 of the vermin dead in her house.

Many of those affected say they have been left traumatised.

The problem first came to light over a year ago, but the rats are still there despite efforts to remove or exterminate them.

Residents say they can hear the rodents scurrying from house to house every night through cavities in the roof spaces.

Calls are being made for statutory agencies to do more to help those living in a nightmare.

A public meeting to voice concerns is due to be held in the coming week, in a bid to find a lasting solution for families.
